Why the SME Cyber Insurance Gap Is Becoming Harder to Ignore

New CFC research highlights the distance between cyber risk awareness, practical preparedness and standalone cover take-up

Why the SME Cyber Insurance Gap Is Becoming Harder to Ignore?w=400

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

New research from specialist insurer CFC, reported on 26 October 2026, has put a sharper number on a problem many Australian small businesses already sense: cyber risk is moving faster than insurance take-up.
CFC’s local findings indicate seven in 10 Australian SMEs surveyed experienced a cyber incident in the past three years, while standalone cyber policy uptake is still estimated at only 10% to 15%.

The figures are significant because they suggest the problem is no longer simply awareness. Most business owners now understand that cyber attacks, payment scams, ransomware, data breaches and system outages can affect ordinary enterprises, not just large corporates. The harder issue is whether that awareness has translated into practical controls, clear response planning and a realistic view of what cyber liability insurance may or may not do.

Artificial intelligence adds urgency, but it should not distract from the basics. Recent guidance from Australian cyber authorities has warned that AI can accelerate malicious activity, including attacks that exploit supplier access, cloud services and legitimate application permissions. For SMEs, the immediate concern is often less futuristic: more convincing phishing emails, faster exploitation of weak credentials, fraudulent payment instructions and accidental disclosure of customer or staff information through poorly governed tools.

That makes cyber insurance a risk management conversation rather than a standalone purchasing decision. A useful review usually starts with the business model: which systems are essential to trading, where customer data is stored, who can approve payments, how backups are tested, and which external providers have access to critical accounts. A retailer relying on point-of-sale systems, an accounting firm holding client records and a trade business using cloud scheduling software may all have different exposure patterns.

Policy wording also matters. SMEs comparing cover should look beyond the headline limit and consider incident response support, legal and regulatory costs, business interruption triggers, social engineering sub-limits, dependent business interruption, exclusions, waiting periods and security conditions. If a policy requires multi-factor authentication, regular backups or specific controls, those obligations need to be understood before a claim, not discovered afterwards.

There are limitations in reading too much into one insurer’s research, particularly where the insurer has a commercial interest in the market. Even so, the direction of travel is difficult to dismiss. Cyber is now a routine operational exposure for many smaller businesses, while uptake of dedicated cover remains uneven. For general planning, a Cyber Insurance Calculator can help frame questions about revenue at risk, downtime, data exposure and security controls before formal policy documents are reviewed.
