Commercial Insurance Softens, but Truck Cover Still Needs Evidence

New market data points to stronger competition, yet heavy vehicle risks remain highly individual

Commercial Insurance Softens, but Truck Cover Still Needs Evidence?w=400

Fresh commercial insurance data points to a more buyer-friendly market, but Australian truck operators should be careful not to read the headline fall as a simple forecast for cheaper heavy vehicle cover.
Marsh’s Q3 2026 Global Insurance Market Index, released on 21 October 2026, reported a 12 per cent fall in Pacific commercial insurance rates for the quarter, led by property and supported by strong insurer competition.
For transport businesses, the practical message is about renewal preparation rather than waiting for automatic premium relief.

The index shows softer conditions across several commercial classes, including property and casualty. That matters for operators with depots, warehouses, workshops, public liability exposures and broader business insurance programmes. However, heavy motor and truck insurance pricing can behave differently from the wider commercial market because underwriters still focus closely on crash frequency, repair cost inflation, parts delays, driver quality, routes, vehicle use and claims history.

This creates a mixed renewal environment. A well-managed fleet with clean maintenance records, clear driver induction processes and credible incident reporting may have more scope to test insurer appetite. A fleet with recent large losses, poor documentation or fast-changing operations may find that broader market competition is offset by its own risk profile. In other words, a softer market improves the conversation, but it does not remove the need to prove control of the underlying risk.

Operators reviewing cover before renewal should separate the different moving parts of their programme:

  • vehicle damage cover for prime movers, rigids, trailers and specialised equipment;
  • goods in transit or cargo cover where freight exposure sits outside standard vehicle insurance;
  • public and products liability, depot property, business interruption and cyber exposures;
  • driver restrictions, excesses, radius limits, endorsements and claims notification obligations;
  • declared values and the sum insured for vehicles, trailers, fitted equipment and accessories.

The risk in a competitive market is that businesses focus only on premium reduction and overlook whether the policy still matches the way the operation is run. If a truck has been modified, routes have changed, higher-value freight is being carried or a new subcontracting arrangement has been introduced, those changes may be more important than the headline rate movement.

The latest data is still only a market average and reflects Marsh’s client mix, not a guaranteed outcome for any owner driver, SME or national fleet. Even so, it gives transport operators a timely reason to approach renewals with detailed information, current asset values and a clear explanation of risk controls. In the present market, the businesses most likely to benefit are those that can show insurers exactly what has improved, not just what they hope will cost less.

Why Liability Pricing Relief Still Needs Caution in Restaurants

Australian restaurants and cafes may be entering a more competitive phase for liability insurance, but the latest market analysis suggests owners should avoid treating softer pricing as a signal that risk has reduced. KPMG Australia's October 2026 liability insurance review, drawing mainly on APRAs National Claims and Policies Database to December 2024, points to moderating pricing momentum after several years of premium strengthening, while also highlighting uneven claims experience across public liability and related classes. - read more

Softer Commercial Insurance Market Gives Tradies More to Weigh Up

Australian trade businesses heading into renewal season may find the commercial insurance market more competitive than it has been for several years, with recent industry updates pointing to softer pricing across several business insurance classes. For tradies, that does not automatically mean every premium will fall, but it does create a useful moment to review whether cover still matches the way the business actually works. - read more
