Why Strong Insurer Results May Not Ease Freelance Premiums

A healthier insurance market still calls for sharper renewal decisions

Why Strong Insurer Results May Not Ease Freelance Premiums?w=400

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

Recent general insurance results point to a sector that is in better financial shape than it was during the most intense period of claims inflation, severe weather losses and investment market volatility.
Industry reporting on APRA data indicates that premium increases, stronger investment returns and more disciplined underwriting have helped Australian insurers rebuild margins, even as natural hazard risk and repair costs remain persistent pressure points.

For freelancers, contractors and sole traders, the headline is not simply that insurers are making money again. The more useful question is whether a stronger insurance sector will translate into more stable pricing, broader cover or easier access to policies. In the short term, the answer may be mixed. Improved insurer profitability can support market resilience, but it does not automatically reverse the premium increases many small operators have absorbed.

The important nuance is that insurers are still pricing for risk that has become more expensive to carry. Professional services claims, cyber events, equipment replacement costs, weather disruption and legal expenses can all feed into policy settings. A freelance designer, consultant, allied health contractor or IT specialist may not look like a large business, but their policy can still reflect broader claims trends across their occupation, location and client profile.

A stronger insurer balance sheet may help reduce the risk of sudden capacity shortages, which matters when freelancers need professional indemnity, public liability, equipment cover or business interruption protection to satisfy contracts. However, underwriters are likely to keep asking more detailed questions about work type, revenue, subcontracting, data handling, overseas clients and past claims. That means renewal paperwork deserves more attention than a quick rollover.

The practical response is to treat the next renewal as a risk review rather than a bill-paying exercise. Check whether your business description still matches the work you actually perform. Review sums insured, portable equipment limits, cyber exposures, excesses and exclusions. If your income has grown, your largest contract has changed, or you now work with bigger clients, yesterday’s cover may no longer be aligned with today’s exposure. Equally, if your risk has reduced, there may be scope to discuss whether your current settings are still appropriate.

This development is an extension of the broader premium affordability story affecting Australian insurance customers. For freelancers, the key takeaway is empowering rather than alarming: a healthier insurance sector is positive, but protection still depends on choosing cover that reflects your real freelance business, not an outdated snapshot of it.

Falls From Height Are Back in Focus for Construction Risk

Renewed regulatory and industry attention on falls from height is a timely warning for Australian builders, subcontractors and project managers. While falls are usually discussed as a work health and safety issue first, they also sit squarely inside the insurance conversation because a serious incident can trigger workers compensation claims, public liability exposure, contractual disputes, investigation costs and reputational damage. - read more

Recent fitness sector guidance has again put safe service delivery in the spotlight for personal trainers, particularly as more Australians mix gym-based sessions with outdoor training, small-group classes, online coaching and higher-intensity programmes. APRA’s operational risk standard, CPS 230, has shifted from a regulatory project into a practical benchmark for banks, insurers and superannuation trustees.
