Could AI Speed Up Heavy Vehicle Repair Claims?

A new repair-estimating tool points to a more data-driven future for motor insurance

Australian smash repair insurtech DingGo has introduced an AI platform designed to produce rapid crash repair estimates from vehicle photos, adding another signal that claims technology is moving quickly across the motor insurance sector.
Its Crash Intelligence AI tool uses a large dataset of completed Australian repairs to estimate likely repair costs, with the company positioning it for dealer groups, independent repairers and panel shops.

For truck owners and transport operators, the immediate relevance is not that every heavy vehicle claim will suddenly be assessed by an algorithm. Heavy trucks, trailers and specialist bodies are far more complex than standard passenger vehicles, and an image-based estimate will not replace the need for skilled assessors, detailed repair scopes or parts availability checks. The bigger point is direction: insurers, repairers and technology providers are looking for ways to shorten the time between damage, quote, approval and repair.

That matters because downtime is one of the most painful costs in transport. A prime mover, rigid truck or refrigerated unit sitting in a repair queue can mean missed contracts, substitute vehicle costs, driver scheduling issues and pressure on cash flow. If AI tools can help repair networks triage damage faster, identify likely costs earlier and reduce back-and-forth between stakeholders, they may eventually support a smoother claims experience for well-documented incidents.

However, faster estimating does not remove the need for operators to have the right cover in place before an accident happens. Policy details such as agreed value, downtime extensions, hire vehicle cover, windscreen and accessories cover, driver criteria, excess structures and repairer choice can all affect the commercial outcome of a claim. This is where operators should regularly compare truck insurance policies rather than treating renewal as a routine admin task.

The development also reinforces the value of better claim preparation. Operators can improve their position by keeping maintenance records, photographing vehicles and fitted equipment, recording pre-incident condition, documenting accessories and ensuring drivers understand incident reporting procedures. These basics can help reduce disputes and give insurers or repairers clearer information to work with, whether assessment is manual, digital or partly automated.

For fleets and owner-operators, the practical takeaway is to watch how insurers respond to repair technology. Faster estimates may become a service differentiator, but the cheapest premium will not always deliver the best outcome if the repair pathway is slow or restrictive. Speaking with experienced truck insurance brokers can help operators test whether their current policy settings are keeping pace with a claims environment that is becoming more digital, more data-driven and increasingly focused on reducing vehicle downtime.
