The cyclone led to over 53,000 insurance claims, with the majority originating from Queensland. To expedite the recovery process, the ICA has released an Expression of Interest (EOI) form aimed at connecting qualified tradespeople-such as electricians, builders, plasterers, and roofers-with insurers and their builders working on restoring affected properties.
Recognizing the potential for labor shortages to delay rebuilding efforts, the ICA is also collaborating with Queensland authorities to facilitate the rapid onboarding of interstate and trans-Tasman workers through Automatic Mutual Recognition of qualifications.
For tradespeople, this initiative presents an opportunity to contribute to community recovery while securing work in regions impacted by the cyclone. It also underscores the critical role that skilled trades play in disaster response and the importance of having adequate insurance coverage to protect against such unforeseen events.
