Cyber Insurance Gap Puts Digital Tradie Risks in Focus

Inquiry evidence suggests cover may be easier to access, but low SME take-up leaves many businesses exposed

Cyber Insurance Gap Puts Digital Tradie Risks in Focus?w=400

Fresh evidence to a federal cyber security inquiry has highlighted a widening mismatch for Australian small businesses: cyber insurance may be becoming cheaper and simpler to arrange, yet many SMEs still appear to be operating without cover.
For tradies who now rely on online invoicing, mobile job apps, cloud accounting, supplier portals and digital payment details, that gap is no longer just a technology issue.

The House Select Committee on Cyber Security for Small to Medium Sized Businesses and Organisations has been hearing from insurance, technology and business representatives as it examines how smaller operators can be better supported. Insurance sector evidence reported this week pointed to falling cyber pricing and reduced complexity in the buying process, while QBE estimated that around one in five Australian SMEs hold cyber insurance, compared with much higher uptake among larger organisations.

That matters because the risk is not limited to large corporates with dedicated IT teams. The Australian Signals Directorate’s latest annual cyber threat reporting found more than 82,000 cybercrime reports in 2025-26, with the average self-reported cost for a small business put at $55,400. For a sole trader or small trade business, that kind of loss can mean far more than a frustrating day offline; it can affect cash flow, client trust, payroll, materials ordering and the ability to keep jobs moving.

For trades businesses, common cyber pressure points can include compromised email accounts, fake supplier payment instructions, stolen customer details, ransomware locking access to invoices or plans, and unauthorised access to cloud systems used by staff or subcontractors. A business that keeps working from a ute rather than an office can still have valuable digital assets, especially if quotes, photos, compliance documents and client communications sit in connected systems.

The practical takeaway is not that every tradie needs the same policy. Cyber cover varies widely, and may sit separately from public liability, tools, commercial motor or broader business insurance. Business owners reviewing their arrangements may wish to ask general questions such as:

  • whether incident response support is included, and how quickly it can be accessed;
  • whether the policy responds to business interruption, data restoration, cyber extortion or funds transfer fraud;
  • what security conditions apply, such as multi-factor authentication, backups or software updates;
  • how subcontractors, cloud providers and outsourced bookkeeping systems are treated;
  • which limits, exclusions and conditions could reduce or prevent a claim.

Lower pricing may make the discussion more accessible, but it does not remove the need to understand the wording. Cyber insurance is also not a substitute for basic controls such as strong passphrases, staff awareness, verified payment changes, regular backups and prompt reporting of incidents.

As the inquiry continues, the key issue for tradies is whether cyber risk is being treated as part of everyday business resilience rather than an add-on for bigger companies. A well-run trade business already protects its tools, vehicle and liability exposures; the digital systems that keep bookings, payments and client records moving now deserve the same level of attention.
