Recent insurance industry reporting has again put cyber risk in front of small businesses, with a clear message for trade operators: digital exposure is no longer limited to office-based companies.
Many electricians, plumbers, builders, landscapers and subcontractors now rely on cloud quoting tools, job management apps, online banking, electronic invoices and customer databases to keep work moving.

For a tradie, a cyber incident may not look like a dramatic corporate data breach. It could be a hacked email account that redirects a progress payment, a fake supplier invoice, a ransomware lockout on scheduling software, or the loss of client details stored on a phone or laptop. The financial impact can still be immediate, especially when cash flow depends on getting paid quickly and keeping crews on site.

The insurance issue is that these losses do not always sit neatly inside standard trade cover. Public liability is generally designed for third-party injury or property damage claims, not payment fraud, data restoration or business email compromise. Tools insurance, workshop contents and commercial motor cover are also focused on physical assets rather than digital disruption. Some business packages may include limited cyber extensions, while others may exclude phishing, social engineering, voluntary transfers or ransomware-related costs unless a specific cyber section has been selected.

That makes renewal time a useful checkpoint. Tradies should ask whether their policy responds to invoice redirection, stolen credentials, data breach response, forensic IT support, legal notification costs, customer communication expenses and interruption to trading systems. It is also worth checking sub-limits, excesses, waiting periods and the evidence required if a claim is made.

Insurers are increasingly interested in prevention as well as recovery. Multi-factor authentication, regular software updates, secure backups, staff training, stronger password controls and clear payment verification processes can all reduce the chance of a claim. For trade businesses that use subcontractors or office support staff, those controls need to apply across the whole workflow, not just the owner's phone or laptop.

Cyber cover will not replace the core protections most tradies still need for tools, vehicles, liability and income risks. But it is becoming part of a broader risk conversation. When estimating suitable limits, the digital side of the business now deserves the same practical attention as the ute, the trailer and the gear in the back.
