Why Insurance Pricing Checks Matter for Trade Renewals

Regulatory action is a reminder to test the premium, not just pay it

Why Insurance Pricing Checks Matter for Trade Renewals?w=400

ASIC’s continuing focus on insurance pricing has delivered another reminder that renewal documents deserve close attention, especially for tradies managing several policies across their business.
Recent regulatory action against an insurer over alleged pricing and discount failures reinforces a practical point: the final premium shown on a renewal notice may not always tell the full story about how that amount was calculated.

For trade businesses, this matters because insurance is rarely a single-policy decision. A self-employed electrician, builder, plumber or carpenter may be juggling public liability, tools cover, commercial motor, contract works, workshop contents and income protection. If a promised discount, rating factor or loyalty benefit is not applied correctly, the effect can flow through cash flow at exactly the wrong time: when registration, licences, materials and supplier bills are also competing for attention.

The issue is not simply whether an insurer has made a technical mistake. It is whether the policyholder can understand the price, challenge an unexplained increase and decide whether the cover still suits the business. Tradies should treat renewal as a review point, not an automatic payment. That means comparing the new premium with last year’s documents, checking whether business activities are still described accurately, and confirming that nominated sums insured still reflect today’s replacement costs.

  • Check whether any discounts or package benefits mentioned in previous documents still appear on the renewal schedule.
  • Review insured values for tools, plant, stock, materials and workshop equipment, particularly where replacement prices have risen.
  • Confirm vehicle use, driver details, garaging address and modifications for utes, vans and work trucks.
  • Read exclusions and sub-limits before assuming a cheaper premium provides equivalent protection.
  • Ask questions early if a premium increase is not clearly explained.

The same discipline applies to public liability cover. A lower premium may look attractive, but it needs to be weighed against contract requirements, site access conditions and the potential scale of property damage or injury claims. Likewise, tools and equipment cover should be reviewed against a current inventory rather than an old purchase list. Where values are unclear, it can be useful to estimate replacement values before requesting updated terms.

The broader lesson from the regulator’s pricing scrutiny is that transparency matters. Tradies do not need to become insurance technicians, but they do need enough information to make informed decisions. If a renewal looks wrong, unclear or out of step with the risks in the business, it is worth pausing before payment. A few checks now can reduce the chance of paying too much, carrying the wrong limits, or discovering a gap only after a claim.

Fresh industry concern about repair delays after severe weather is highly relevant for Australian farms, where a damaged shed, washed-out access track or unavailable part can quickly interrupt day-to-day operations.
