The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has recently highlighted the need for home insurers to enhance their oversight of independent experts and improve communication with consumers, particularly concerning cash settlements.
This call to action stems from ASIC's ongoing efforts to ensure that insurers provide fair and transparent services to policyholders.

ASIC's review revealed that while some progress has been made since their previous report, significant gaps remain in how insurers manage and oversee the work of independent experts. Inadequate oversight can lead to inconsistencies and potential unfairness in claim outcomes, undermining consumer trust in the insurance process.

Furthermore, ASIC identified that communication regarding cash settlements is often lacking. Policyholders may not receive sufficient information to make informed decisions when offered a cash settlement instead of repairs or replacements. Clear and comprehensive communication is essential to ensure that consumers understand their options and the implications of accepting a cash settlement.

For tradespeople, these findings are particularly pertinent. Many tradies rely on home insurance policies to protect their tools, equipment, and workspaces. Ensuring that insurers adhere to best practices in claims handling and communication can significantly impact the speed and fairness of claim resolutions, which is vital for maintaining business operations.

ASIC Commissioner Alan Kirkland emphasized the importance of insurers addressing these issues promptly. He stated that insurers should not wait for another extreme weather event to test their claims handling processes. Instead, they should proactively assess and improve their practices to better serve consumers.

Tradespeople are encouraged to stay informed about their rights and the standards they should expect from insurers. In the event of a claim, it's advisable to seek detailed information about the assessment process and any settlement offers. Being proactive and informed can help ensure that tradies receive fair treatment and adequate compensation, enabling them to continue their work with minimal disruption.
